What is IP Address?
An IP Address or Internet Protocol Address is a sequence of numbers that is used to identify the location of various computing devices like computers and, laptops on a network. Every computer has assigned a unique IP address code and therefore, IP address sometimes acts as a unique identification code. A standard IP address contains four digit numbers separated by full stops or decimals. Each of the four digit number is of 8 bits binary number with a range from 0 to 255. Hence, each IP address is made up of 32 bits. For each number with a range in between 0 and 255, there are a maximum of 4,294,967,296 IP addresses are possible.

IP Address Classes
As explained above an IP address is a 32 bit binary number with a division of 4 octets of number ranging from 0-255. Following are the 5 IP addresses classes: Class A, Class B, Class B, Class C, Class D and, Class E. Class A, Class B and, Class C are the most widely used classes and can be used to provide the Host address. While Class D and Class E can be used for Multicast purpose and Experimental purpose respectively and are reserved classes. Each class has its own IP address range.
Let’s understand each term one by one:
Class A IP Address
Class A IP addresses are assigned to very large number of networks.
The first and high order bit of first octet is always set to zero and the remaining 7 bits of first octet represents the network ID. While the last 3 octets (24 bits) of the address represents the Host ID.
Class A IP address ranges from 1-127.
Class A supports maximum of 127 networks.
Class B IP Address
Class B addresses are assigned to networks from medium sized to large sized hosts.
The first and second bit of first octet is always set to one and zero respectively and the remaining 14 bits of first two octets represents the Network ID. While the last two octets (16 bits) of the address represents the Host ID.
Class B address ranges from 128-191.
Class B supports maximum of 191 networks.
Class C IP Address
Class C addresses are used for small sized organizations.
The first two bit of the Class C address is always set to 1 and third bit of the first octet is always to zero. Remaining 21 bits completing the first three octets represents network ID. While the last octet (8 bits) represents the Host ID.
Class C address ranges from 192-223.
Class C supports maximum of 223 networks.
Class D IP Address
Class D addresses are reserved for IP multicasting purposes.
The first three bits of Class D address is always to 111 and the fourth bits of first octet is set to zero. There is no need to extract host address within the class D IP address.
Class D addresses are ranges from 224-239 and used to identify multicast groups.
Class D supports maximum of 239 networks.
Class E IP Address
Class E IP addresses are used for experimentation purposes only. The class is reserved for Research & Development and for future use only. Since the class is reserved, it has been used in any form.
Class E addresses are ranges form 240-254.
Class E supports maximum of 254 networks.
